When Your Business Isn’t Making Money Yet: What to Do (and How to Stay Sane)

No one talks about this enough:

The season where you’re showing up every day — building, creating, grinding — and still, your bank account doesn’t show it. The season where your heart is full of dreams, but your pockets are full of dust.

It’s one of the hardest, most isolating parts of entrepreneurship — and if you’re in it right now, I want you to know: you’re not alone.

You’re not broken. You’re not a phony. You’re not wasting your time. You’re in one of the most crucial, gut-wrenching, character-building stages of your journey. And while it feels unbearable some days, it’s also shaping you into someone who can handle the weight of real success when it finally arrives.

Let’s be honest though: Knowing that doesn’t always make it easier to survive the day-to-day stress. So let’s talk about it — what to do when your business isn’t making money yet… and how to stay sane while you’re fighting for it.

First: Acknowledge How Hard This Is

Don’t gaslight yourself.

This stage is brutal. You’re putting out your best ideas, your best work, your best offers — and sometimes, the world responds with silence. You watch other people post their “wins” online while you’re wondering if you made the biggest mistake of your life. This is hard. This is real.

And pretending otherwise only makes it worse. Give yourself permission to feel frustrated, sad, discouraged, and exhausted. Feeling that way doesn’t mean you’re failing — it means you’re trying.

Second: Separate Your Worth from Your Revenue

This one is crucial.

You are not your bank account.
You are not your latest sale — or lack of one.
You are not a failure because your business isn’t profitable yet.

You are still a builder.
You are still valuable.
You are still a creator who is bringing something new into the world.

If you tie your self-worth to your income, every slow day will break you. You have to hold onto the truth: You were worthy before you ever made a dime. And you still are.

Third: Get Ruthlessly Practical

Passion is beautiful, but when money is tight, you have to get practical.

Ask yourself some hard, clear questions:

  • Am I solving a real problem that people are willing to pay for right now?
  • Am I talking to the right audience?
  • Am I making it simple enough for people to say yes?
  • Am I offering something urgent — or something people think they can wait on?

If the answer to any of these is no, it’s time to pivot — not give up, but adjust. Sometimes it’s not that your dream is wrong. It’s just the strategy around it needs tweaking.

Maybe that means offering a smaller, quicker product or service right now to build income while still working on your bigger vision. Maybe it means cutting costs temporarily to stay afloat. Maybe it means shifting your marketing, messaging, or the people you’re targeting. Staying open and flexible doesn’t mean you’re abandoning your dream. It means you’re fighting smart to protect it.

Fourth: Create a Small, Winnable Plan

One of the fastest ways to lose your mind is to think about everything you need to do all at once.

Instead, build a 30-day plan:

  • Focus on one product, one service, or one offer.
  • Set a realistic income goal (even if it’s small).
  • Map out one or two actions every day that move you closer to that goal.
  • Track your tiny wins — not just the big ones.

Momentum isn’t created by thinking bigger — it’s created by moving smaller steps forward every day, no matter how tired you are.

Fifth: Surround Yourself with Truth-Tellers, Not Just Cheerleaders

You need people around you who won’t just hype you up, but will remind you of the truth when you forget it.

You need someone who says:

  • “You’re still making progress, even if you don’t feel like it.”
  • “You’ve overcome harder things than this.”
  • “You’re not crazy — you’re just early.”

You don’t need people who only tell you what you want to hear — you need people who speak life into you when you want to quit.

If you don’t have those people yet, start finding them. Look for entrepreneur communities, writers’ groups, small business meetups, even one or two trusted friends. Don’t battle doubt in silence. It grows when you isolate. It shrinks when you connect.

Finally: Redefine What Winning Looks Like

Winning isn’t just hitting six figures. Winning isn’t just going viral or selling out your product. Winning is:

  • Showing up again after a hard day.
  • Learning a better way to serve your audience.
  • Strengthening your faith in yourself when no one else claps.

Every day you don’t quit — you’re winning. Every time you risk belief in yourself — you’re winning. Every time you adjust, learn, pivot — you’re winning. Even if it’s quiet. Even if no one sees it. Even if it doesn’t feel like it yet. You are building the story that one day you’ll tell from a very different place — a place of victory. And when you get there, you’ll know exactly how much grit it took to earn it.

If your business isn’t making money yet, you are not a failure. You are in the middle of the story, and the middle always feels messy.

The finish line isn’t built for the fastest — it’s built for the faithful. So keep walking. Keep breathing. Keep building. Because your breakthrough might be closer than you think. And when it comes, it won’t just be about the money. It will be about the person you had to become to get there. That’s the real prize. 💙

I Am My Own Worst Enemy — And I’m Learning to Let Go | Books By Tony Mudd
By Tony Mudd June 8, 2025
I know what it’s like to be my own worst enemy. More and more, I’m starting to realize that life isn’t just about chasing dreams — it’s about waking up with intention. It’s about making decisions that don’t just look good on the outside but feel right on the inside. What if the real reason we’re not thriving isn’t because of what we lack — but because of what we keep doing to hold ourselves back? Most of us wake up chasing things — love, happiness, success, freedom. We sprint toward the life we think we want. But have you ever paused to ask if you’re unintentionally moving in the opposite direction? We all carry habits, thoughts, and patterns that slowly chip away at our progress. Sometimes it’s self-doubt whispering we’re not enough.
I’m Done Chasing Happiness??| Books By Tony Mudd
By Tony Mudd May 29, 2025
You can have love, money, health, friendship, and even recognition — and still feel like something’s missing. Why? Because Happiness is fleeting. That’s when the truth hits: happiness isn’t the destination — it’s a side effect. And if you’ve built your life chasing that feeling, you’ll find yourself constantly asking, “Why am I still not satisfied?” Because you weren’t made to feel good all the time. The storms will come. The job may end. The relationship might shake. The success you worked so hard for might feel hollow the moment after you achieve it. But when you’re rooted in purpose, you’re not just living for something — you’re living through something.
It’s Not You. It’s Not Your Product. You’re Just Not Connected. | Books By Tony Mudd
By Tony Mudd May 3, 2025
We’ve been told that people buy what they need—but that’s a myth. In today’s world, people spend money on what makes them feel something: excitement, relief, status, connection. If your product isn’t selling, it might not be because it’s bad—it might be because it isn’t connected to what your audience wants. In this post, I break down the emotional truth behind buying decisions, why solving a problem isn’t always enough, and how to shift your offer to match real human behavior.
Doubt Is a Dream Killer: And I Know Because I’m Fighting It | Books By Tony Mudd
By Tony Mudd March 31, 2025
Doubt is a contagious disease. Doubt is real. It’s messy. It’s painful. And yes — it can be crippling. But it does not get the final say. Every time you speak through it, move through it, show up in spite of it — you reclaim your power.
Don’t Let the Ones You Love Most Drive Your Future | Books By Tony Mudd
By Tony Mudd March 24, 2025
It’s a strange, heartbreaking feeling when the person you love most becomes the one who questions your dream. Not out of jealousy. Not out of bitterness. But out of fear. You’re working toward purpose, chasing a vision that keeps you up at night and wakes you up in the morning. But then, someone you deeply love — your partner, a parent, maybe even a best friend — plants a quiet seed of doubt: “What if it doesn’t work?” “What if people don’t show up?” “What if you’re disappointed?” And just like that, a dream that once felt full of fire starts to feel heavy. It took me time to realize this truth: the fears of others are often disguised as love. They don’t want to hurt you. They don’t want you to fail. They don’t want to watch you give your all and get nothing in return. So they use what they know — logic, caution, risk analysis. And they speak from their own stories, their own pain, their own past.
When Being the Hero Feels Like Too Much | Books By Tony Mudd
By Tony Mudd March 9, 2025
Sometimes, being the hero sucks. We love the idea of rising against the odds, pushing through obstacles, and coming out victorious. But no one talks about the weight of carrying everything alone. No one talks about the exhaustion of giving your all — day after day — only to feel like you’re still stuck in the same place. Your white cape may save others, but it leaves you exposed, blowing in the wind, battling storms that no one else sees. But who saves you when you can’t save yourself? If you’ve ever felt like you’re doing everything right and still getting nowhere — this is for you.
I Just Launched My First Thriller — Here’s Why It Means So Much to Me | Books By Tony Mudd
By Tony Mudd March 2, 2025
I’m excited (and a little nervous) to share the story behind my very first thriller, The Locksmith. This book started with a simple moment—getting locked out of my own house—and grew into a story about trust, fear, and the dangers we never see coming. In this post, I’m opening up about why I wrote it, what inspired me, and what I hope readers take away from the story. Whether you love thrillers or you’ve ever felt that quiet fear of not knowing who you can trust, I hope you’ll check it out. Read the full story below.

When Hard Work Doesn’t Feel Like Enough | Books By Tony Mudd
By Tony Mudd February 3, 2025
Sometimes, we’re too close to the battle to see how far we’ve actually come. It’s like climbing a mountain — you spend so much time struggling up the slope that you forget to turn around and admire the view. If you’re feeling stuck, pause and reflect on what you’ve already built.
The Power of Attitude: The Untold Truth About Success At The Top | Books By Tony Mudd
By Tony Mudd January 19, 2025
Nobody throws parades for kindness, and you don’t see billboards celebrating emotional resilience. Society tells us that success is about money, titles, and flashy achievements. But here’s the real question: What’s the point of all that if your attitude stinks and you treat people like crap? Seriously, what’s the use of winning if everyone around you is rooting for your downfall? What good is a big paycheck if your coworkers avoid you like the plague? Success isn’t just about what you accomplish — it’s about how you accomplish it. And your attitude? That’s the silent MVP of the whole game.
